Christmas with the Johnson's and Russell's and Trammell's!

It was so fun to go spend some time with all of Richard's side of the family for an early Christmas.  10 adults and 10 kids all in all.  Kids ranged from 8 years to 11 months and a surprise one on the way!

Getting all 10 to sit still look the same way and smile is almost impossible but we got real close!  But Bub's cousin that's 4 weeks younger is a little trickster.  Bribery by candy and popsicle worked- a little.   This is what happened about every 30 seconds during the attempted photo shoot.

And then he was swooped up and set back in his chronological order in line.  Too funny.  The kids- young and old had a blast rolling down the levy.

This year we decided instead of exchanging presents we would as a family make manna bags to hand out to the homeless.  Each family contributed their portion and we divided it all up.  It will be a blessing for the kids to see us help out someone in need.

So Frita had a loose tooth before we went to the Trammell's and for some reason she said I need to pray that I don't lose my tooth while I'm there.  Well in fact she did not lose her front tooth that was loose but did lose the one that wasn't.  She was full sprint across the yard and teeth first into a chair- voila one missing tooth.  We did find it and tooth fairy did make an appearance.
It was quite tramatic and the scrapes and bruises are begining to appear but not she is learning to do all kinds of tricks.

Sweet cousin saying see I've lost my teeth too!

Christmas cookies for 3 generations!

Oh the snuggling around the ipod!

We had just enough characters to reenact the Christmas story.  Aunt Julia read the script and Uncle Ben was a stand in wise man.  So fitting.

Mary and Gabriel- yes we know it is not the correct gender but I don't think any of the boys would have been up for pink wings.

And baby Trammell woke up just in time to play the part of Jesus.  He was such a champ laying in that box.

Everyone wanted to love on Jesus!  Good thing Mom was close by.

Opening of the presents, a quick ride around the neighborhood to look at lights and dinner rounded off our evening.

Christmas Card Pictures

Most everyone should have gotten their Christmas cards by now so I'll post a few pics from our photo shoot.  Mama De, our professional photographer/MIL, delivered a awesome performance once again!

A little while back we had breakfast in the park with our adult community at Terramont Park.  Love this place for photo shoots.  Lots of good backdrops.

My sweet babes!  Gidget the dog even made the pic.

I stole this pose from Pinterest.  Rich even studied the picture and posed perfect.  Bub is trying to imitate Dad without any prompting.  I love how much he loves his Daddy!  I am so proud of Richard's Daddy skills!

I think it is important to have some lovey dovey pictures of a husband and a wife.   Perfect framing of the shadow.

Can't believe both agreed to this and did it so well.

My beauty that is getting way too big!

The beginning of many more to come silhouette pictures.

I'm also a fan of walking pics.  Bub had to go to the bathroom in this pic and so every time he see's it he says that's when I had to pee.  Oh the memories.

We were on a disc golf course so we had to watch for flying objects.

This one almost never stops smiling.  She wakes up this way.  God made her with a heart full of joy!

How to make signage!

I am absolutely obsessed with making these signs.   Pinterest introduced me on some tips and I made my first sign for Thanksgiving.  Give Thanks Psalm 118:1.
I had some leftover wood from cake boards that had been custom trimmed for each cake and paint that was in my stash.

I am going to use this to post scriptures all over the house and add a little spice to each holiday.  Each Wednesday (our trash day) I have been heading out looking for scrap wood to paint on.  Lowe's has scrap pieces of wood located behind the large saw and pieces of fence works great too.

The finished product!
So my next project was for Christmas.  True love was born in a stable!

The first tutorial that I saw is a good technique for some mediums and others not so much.  I think this technique is best for soft wood and walls.

Print out letters and line up on piece of wood or the wall.  I suggest you tape it but be careful it might take off the paint. Using a ballpoint pen trace outline of letters.  I used this on the Give Thanks sign and it was ridiculously difficult and was thinking this might be my last sign.  The wood was very hard and it took a lot of pressure to get the indention.

Paint the inside of the indent.  This indention acts as a well for the paint.
You will need a good tiny brush- I used both a slanted one and a straight one.  After I had painted this sign I found a super cool website that offers free fonts from handwriting samples.
Fonts for Peas
This is what I used for the next sign.

Technique #2

Transferring ink from paper to wood.

  1. You'll start by find an old piece of wood.  The more distressed the better.  You might want to add a little age with a hammer.  My kids loved being involved and hammering away.
  2. Choose your paint- I used a spray paint and it did not work well so I switched to a flat paint that was just hanging out in my garage.  I have also found that Lowe's has paint that never got picked up.  They have pre-made samples for sale and they are usually $0.50.  Perfect for these projects!
  3. Paint your board.  You can either paint it perfectly or very imperfectly.  While it dries head to your computer.
  4. I used a Word document and a super cool font, added a heart from clipart and printed it off.
 5.  Once I placed the words where I wanted them I printed off my image backwards.  If you go into the properties you click on the box mirror image.  This is what mine looked like.

6.  Turn your piece of paper over so that the ink is face down on your wood, position it so that it's centered and begin brushing the paper with your wet paintbrush.

No matter how much I painted with water or bleach or peroxide or acetone I could not release the ink from my paper.  I do have an inkjet printer but it would not work for me soooo I accidentally stumbled on to a technique.  I had brushed on some acetone and walked away for a few minutes and came back to rub the letters with the of a Sharpie.
And it worked!  Little did I know at the time the paper had dried and that was the trick that worked for me!  Dry in rubbed off with a Sharpie!
7.  Next I painted the letters and it turned out perfect!  I added a little darker brown to the edges, a cross at the bottom and a heart from Clip Art.
8.  Finally, nail or staple twine to the back of your wood to act as a hanger for your new, old-looking sign.

Homemade Laundry Detergent

We are finally biting the bullet and making our own laundry detergent.  I have been reluctant because I was worried that it wouldn't work as well.  I have done several loads and am quite satisfied.

It will help if you have a 5 gallon bucket- we got one at Lowe's for $3 I think.  You will also find it helpful to save 10 gallons worth of used, clean laundry soap dispensers.  I hadn't collected enough when the first batch was made so I headed out on trash day and every other house had an empty laundry detergent container in their recycle bin.   I washed them well and have about 6 containers-we'll be headed out again on Thursday to hopefully top off our stash.  Have to get some essential oils to add to it...

Here's the recipe:
4 cups - hot tap water
1 Fels-Naptha Heavy Duty Laundry Bar Soap ($0.97 @ our local Walmart)
You can also use a Zote Bar
1/2 cup Borax ($2.98 @ Walmart)
Fels Naptha Heavy Duty Laundry Bar Soap, 5.5oz ($0.97 @ Walmart) ONLY one bar! OOPs
1 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda ($2.34 @ Walmart)***
***This is not Arm & Hammer baking soda.  Our Walmart has all 3 ingredients right next to each other.***
Do not turn your back on this- it will bubble over!
Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with hot water.  Stir continually over medium heat until soap dissolves and is melted.  Took me about 10 minutes.
Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of tap water.  Add melted soap, washing soda and borax.  Stir well until all the powder is dissolved.  Fill the bucket to top with more hot water.  Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.
Richard is such a trooper!

Stir the contents of the bucket.  Fill used, clean laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of the way with water.  Shake before each use because it gels.
You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons.  Add once soap has cooled.
Makes 10 gallons.
Top load machines - 5/8 cup per load = about 180 loads - For us this is about 6 months worth of laundry detergent!
Front load machines - 1/4 cup per load = 640 loads
Next up Dish washing Liquid!
